A new UBC study suggests that rebate programs offered to hybrid vehicle buyers by government fail to produce environmental benefits.
The study found that rise in sales of hybrid vehicles that are relatively fuel efficient than conventional cars and trucks, produce significantly greater carbon emissions.
According to Ambarish Chandra, a professor at UBC’s Sauder School of Business and study co-author, says, ” if the intention of the rebate programs on hybrid vehicles is to replace gas guzzlers with hybrids, they are failing.”
“People are choosing hybrids over similarly priced small- and medium-sized conventional cars, which are not far behind hybrids for fuel efficiency and emissions,”says Chandra.
