common global warming myths

There are plenty of discussions and debates happening everywhere regarding the global weather conditions getting rapidly changed. Global warming is one of the most threatening issues that planet earth is facing in the recent decades. Although scientists across the world have come up with the real reasons for the global warming around our atmosphere, there are numerous myths spreading about the same.

common global warming mythsFollowing are some of the most common myths related to global warming and the related facts:

Global Temperatures are in the Rise at a Rapid Rate

According to studies done by scientist and weather experts, it is notified that the rate of global warming from the year 1994 to 1998 was the same as that of the previous rate from 1911 to 1941. Additionally the small increase of 0.6 to 0.6 C after the 20th century is recorded as within the limits of natural deviations noted in the previous millennium. In reality there has been no shattering warming degrees recorded by studies.

The “Hockey Stick” Graph of Temperature Decrease for Past 1000 Years and then Suddenly Increase in the Recent Years

The scientific fact is that throughout geologic time, drastic changes in climate have constantly happened.  From the beginning of 17th century, the weather graphs were showing a low rate of steady increase in the warming rate globally. The authenticity of “hockey stick” graph is disputed among scientists and is statistically not proven as well.

Carbon Dioxide Produced by Humans Increased in Last 100 Years

Carbon dioxide levels are undoubtedly increased in the atmosphere due to various reasons as it was always throughout centuries. Owing to the industrial revolution, the rate of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased at a rate of 0.2% per year and is presently 0.4% per year for the last 25 years. However, there is no scientific proof to state that CO2 is the only reason for global warming for the past 100 years.

Carbon Dioxide – the Most Common Greenhouse Gas

The greenhouse gases occupy 3% of space in atmosphere volume, which comprises of 97% of water vapour and clouds and the remaining as gases like CO2, N2O, Ozone and CH4. Although the minor gases are known as greenhouse agents, due to the enormity of volume water vapour and clouds are considered as accountable for greenhouse effect.

Computer Models Confirm that CO2 Increases Global Warming

While the computer models attribute carbon dioxide as the major driver for global warming, scientific studies clearly state the significance of sun’s rays as the major cause for temperature variation. The fluctuating amount of solar radiation affects the surface temperature and also the emission of gases like carbon dioxide.

Carbon Dioxide is Pollutant

This myth is completely wrong as nitrogen comprises 80 % of the atmosphere and it is a similar gas like carbon dioxide. Although it has some bad effects in an excessive amount, it is essential for plant life on earth.

Disappearing Glaciers and Calving of Ice Shelves Confirms Global Warming

There is no scientific evidence or statistical support to this myth, as both these activities have been occurring for centuries. Besides, changes in glaciers and ice shelves are happening mainly due to precipitation and varying temperatures.
