As purse strings tighten and the world increasingly shifts its focus to eco-friendly products and lifestyles, it’s hard to overlook the money-saving benefits that more environmentally-aware products bring to the table.

Research from insurance provider Castle Cover showed that utility prices have increased drastically over recent years, so while shopping around can save you money on your bills there is still a lot more you can do to reduce your outgoings such as switching your car to LPG which will help you hang onto a bit more cash.

The process of making your home greener has a little more to it than simply adding energy-saving light bulbs to each socket of the home, yet these little-considered tips will also help lighten the load on your bank account!

Firstly, a lot of electricity can be saved by using a clothes airer. While tumble driers are certainly effective, they can use massive amounts of electricity and won’t help your clothes stay looking their best, as they can damage the fibres. Should you have a bit of space on your ceiling, consider fitting a drying rack that can take advantage of the warmest part of the room.

Consider, too, the benefits of fitting aerators to taps. Should your taps have a screw thread on the outlet, you could really save the environment and money as these little gadgets mix water with air to give you a full flow, despite using a lot less H2O. Similarly, if you decide that new taps are needed, ensure they come with aerators as standard.

Adding draught proofing to all doors and windows will also cut down on your energy bills for such a small cost. Closing all air gaps around these fixings with the simple use of self-adhesive flexible strips available is easy and effective, and they can be bought in pretty much any home improvement shops.

There are also plenty of natural, safe and cheap things you can buy at a supermarket that will provide you with real results without carrying the usual price tag. What’s more, you can make a lot of these products yourself. Vinegar, for example, is a fantastic thing to use to clean and disinfect glass, as well as a whole host of other surfaces. Tougher stains may only require you to add bicarbonate of soda to this vinegar cleaner.

Finally, if you do buy electronics, always look out for the Energy Saving Trust’s “Recommended” logo. This is only given to appliances that receive an A+ or A++ rating. This video provides more information about what the Recommended Logo means.

Click here to view the embedded video.

If you’re struggling to choose the product that’s best for you – whether it’s a washing machine, toaster or microwave – theEnergy Saving Trust has an online database of all models that save money for you in the long-term.

Continuing pressures on personal budgets have made money-saving efforts across the home, such as installing solar panels from evoenergy.co.uk, increasingly popular as households struggle to keep purse strings tight.

Solar panel energy now accounts for approximately 20 per cent of the energy used per year. This is thought to have increased due to government schemes encouraging people to use alternative fuels and reduce carbon footprints.

There are different types of cash-back rewards to benefit solar panel users. As well as this incentive, an average three to four-bedroom house could make over £800 of tax-free savings on energy bills every year.

If you need to reduce your outgoings further, consider some of the following options.

There are countless instantly effective behavior-adjusting techniques, such as turning the heating down by a degree or two, right up to significant investments, like replacing windows and dry lining walls. These are all worth consideration as they will reduce long-term household expenditure.

It is worth assessing your property to find out what is causing the most heat loss and addressing that with the appropriate insulation. Around 35 per cent of heat is lost through uninsulated walls and 25 per cent through the roof, meaning a significant portion of the heat you are paying for is being completely wasted.

Upgrading your light bulbs and appliances to energy-efficient types will have a great impact on your bills. Altering family members’ bad habits and improving their energy awareness is also important – remember that leaving electrical goods on standby, overcharging devices and leaving fridge/freezer doors open too long are very common causes of wasted energy. Making these simple changes will quickly result in reduced utility bills.

Armed with some energy efficiency awareness tips and a little investment, you can stand to make impressive reductions in household expenses. By applying various methods, this can be achieved to have both long and short-term payoffs.

Clothing is an area that is nearly limitless in its possibilities. T-shirts, the most common form of clothing, printed t shirts especially malleable when it comes to style choices. With the different designs that are available in just a T-shirt, the tastes of every person are represented.

Many of these shirts are manufactured in processes and with materials that leave a lasting effect on the environment. More and more, however, people today are looking for ways to develop their own style in a way that helps the world around them.

While most people are interested in helping the environment, they are not willing to give up their lifestyle to do so. And why should they? T-shirts can be matched with nearly any outfit or occasion, and they are comfortable to wear.

Even in the scorching heat of summer, they remain cool enough to wear. The design can vary, as well, depending on the occasion. They can be bought plain or with pre-set designs; you can also make your own, if desired. There is honestly no need to give up such a versatile piece of clothing. It is almost a laughable suggestion, so long as there are other options. Eco-friendly T-shirts are one of them.

Eco-friendly T-shirts? Yes, it is possible. They are manufactured in such a way that every step of the process is adapted to be beneficial and healthy for the environment. Even the materials used are organic, meaning that they are entirely natural.

The cotton is grown free of pesticides and other harmful chemicals, creating a purer material. While most T-shirts are printed with a toxic material known as plastisol and require additionally harmful cleanup methods, eco-friendly T-shirts use only materials that are not hazardous.

The inks for printing the designs are water-based. These dissolve right back into the environment with little effect. They bond directly to the fibers of the fabric without clogging it, making it lighter and able to breathe better.

Making Your Own Style

Eco-friendly T-shirts are just as versatile as their more environmentally dangerous counterparts. The printing process allows for the same varieties in designs, giving you the ability to display your own unique style.

Blank T-shirts are merely a canvass for you to exhibit your own tastes. However, there are a wide variety of designs, logos, and colors available to add diversity to your closet. Additionally, you can even create your own design for a personalized touch using a software program.

Even without your own access to printing facilities, there are many companies who are on the ball about keeping this world safe and healthy, and whose products reflect these views.

The heat of summer doesn’t have to mean a degrading of values. As the weather warms up, combine flair with a worldview that allows everyone to breathe easier. Even the most environmentally-conscious can still hold to their beliefs and yet have a chic style.

The cars in our days seem to be able to do everything, they almost drive themselves, but there are some things that seem to be impossible for them, and one extremely important thing is being eco-friendly.

While we might think that this is an important concept for people, there are still numerous persons who are willing to make a financial effort to get ‘monster’ cars.

One of them is Bugatti Veyron. This is said to be the fastest car in the market, but in the same time it is the most polluting for the environment. It takes less than three seconds to go from 0 to 60 mph.

This supercar got a Green score of 19, while the highest scoring 2011 car, the Honda Civic GX got 54 points. The only good news is that the car is way too expensive to be bought by many people.

Another monster that the green people have to look out for is the Chevrolet Suburban K2500. This car got a slightly higher green Score than the Bugatti Veyron, 20 points.

Also in this case people might have a problem with the sum of money they would have to spend on their car, because those who fill the tank once a week might have to spend about $8000 yearly only on fuel. At this sum of money it might be more efficient to get a Prius.

The Dodge couldn’t miss from the list either. In this case the Dodge Ram 2500 Mega Cab made it to the black list and this is one of those four pickup trucks that appear on it. In this case also the score is 20.

The same score has been earned by the Chevrolet/GMC G2500 Cargo Van. Truth is that usually these cars are used more on the highway than in the city, and they are pumping toxic gases into the air as they go by.

Nonetheless there is some good news as well. There are some eco-friendlier alternatives, like Ford Transit Connect Electric Cargo Van.

Ford also managed to create a monster this year. The F-250 model got the score of 20 and the interesting thing about this model is that the potential customers hardly find the fuel efficiency rating of the truck.

On the other hand they will be able to find videos comparing this model to its competitors the Chevy Silverado and Dodge Ram. The customers shouldn’t let themselves fooled by the FFV designation.

What do you do when you are a big company with an energy cost of over 10,000 dollars and a production output equaled by the same amount? The answer is: you get an energy audit.

Many companies such as those involved in heavy manufacturing process face the challenge of reducing the energy consumption. This is normally done by energy optimization rather than rationalizing the energy and recently a new brand of energy audit proved very effective for establishing the right energy plan.

A company producing in an industrial environment is basing the production process on the production output, and the consumption reduction can be impossible to achieve without affecting the production flow and the quality of the product.

An industrial energy audit can make an accurate evaluation and identify the measures that need to be taken in order to reduce the energy consumption.

In how much time does the cost of an industrial energy audit reach the amortization? What is exactly the gain from this process? The answer lies in the results of the industrial energy audit which is translated in a set of feasible measures meant to cut the energy cost and increase the energetic performance of the company.

The annual savings obtained via organizational measures (without additional investment) are covering in full the cost of the audit and can even generate a profit in savings.

In the last years, the industrial energy audit became all over the world, a must for all the large companies from the industrial areas. The energy audit became a rule for the companies to obtain the environmental certificate and had as purpose discovering alternative means of energy that could power the industry.

The energy audit became this way a certifying tool in determining how pollutant is a certain industry sector, a fact that forced the authorities in the business world to consider the law modification instated by the international organizations.

This is how the industrial energy became the source process for recovering not only costs but also process energy such as heat and electrical energy. The energy audit became the tool through which the international organization forced the high energy consumers to send bi-annual reports on how much did they reduced the pollution by reducing energy consumption.

The purpose of this international strategy is to reduce the consumption of methane, compressed air, electricity and industrial waters and with it the carbon footprint of industry giants.

The UN general assembly has declared 2011 the International Year of the Forests. The campaign comes with an impressive logo focused on showing the importance of each essential element we take advantage of from the international ecosystem.

The campaign logo covers everything from the air purifying effect of the forests to the healing powers of the forest plants. It is proving that the title of this worldwide campaign is simply related to how we can improve the health of the forests that are covering 31% of the Earth’s land surface.

The International Year of the Forests made its debut on 24 January with a New York forum under the patronage of UN.

According to IUCN, the forest protection would help humanity to achieve some of the most ambitious plans, reducing the poverty, stopping the global warming and encouraging sustainable growth.

We all know that the forests of the world are the air we breathe, the medicines we use for healing, their biodiversity being strictly related to our way of life. The global climate is degenerating because the forests are becoming smaller and smaller every year and the purpose of the 2011 campaign is to do something about it.

Currently the forests of the World host over 80% of the genes, species and ecosystems, which define the concept of life on Earth. The forests of the planet offer the means for survival to over 1. 6 billion people which stand for a quarter of the human kind.

The forests are the climate anchors and because they now cover only 31% of the Earth’s surface, the climate changes become more obvious every day. In the last year the growth of the surfaces used for agriculture led to the deforestation of 13 million acres of which almost 60% were part of the tropical forests. At this rate the forests will be extinct in the next 100 years.

According to WWF, the deforestation is responsible for 15% of the total greenhouse effect we are currently experiencing and the percentage increases with every tree that is cut.

Along with making people aware of the importance of the forests, the 2011 International Year of the Forests event has also very concrete objectives. To celebrate this event, countries like Ethiopia, Georgia, Jamaica, Lebanon, Poland and Korea proposed to conduct massive forest planting campaigns.

Let’s hope this will be the start for a forest green land, better air to breathe and a healthier world to live in.

The world talks about saving the planet and the lady in you thinks factories and acid rain. Since you are not wonder woman to take your whip and go save the world, you can help reducing the garbage you produce and the energy you consume. To this you can add a bit of good will and positive attitude.

It is only feminine to like paper towels and paper tissues. They look more hygienic, a lot handier and in the end they were created for our commodity. Try and stop using them and you will save 5% of the kitchen garbage you produce.

Be a lady and use old school micro fiber kitchen towels. They are cute and fluffy and you can find them in any color ready to match your kitchen design.

You can use them for cleaning the place, for washing the dishes and even for dusting. And when you are done you can simply throw them in the washing machine.

We like being beautiful and getting facials. How organic those facials are is an entirely different story.

If you are looking for a high quality exfoliation to refresh your skin look, make sure you don’t throw away the coffee grounds. Add the grounds to your face wash gel and use it.

You will get a milder exfoliation than you would get at a saloon but statistics say that this type of treatment repeated for a month has the same effect as a chemical peel with the exception that it will not slaughter your face.

The spring cleaning is something all ladies are bound to do. If in the process you decide to paint the rooms of the house so that they follow a certain trend, make sure you buy the exact amount of paint you need. The shop assistants can assist you in choosing the less invasive products and they can also calculate the amount you need using the measurements you give them. This way you will save money and you won’t have tons of toxic paint to throw away because you bought too much.

Be a lady and smile to people on the street. The studies show that every act of kindness decreases our carbon footprint. If you have around the house things that you don’t use anymore, just donate them. Share a part of your meal when you cook too much food and once a week make a habit of doing something for the community.

If you think that the green behavior is strictly related to energy, recycling and consumption, you are wrong. Being green has a lot to do with people and their attitude towards each other.

A study conducted by the University of Newcastle, Great Britain, and financed by the European Union has analyzed 22 different brands of milk normally found in supermarkets. The study concluded that the organic milk has a lower level of saturated fats which are bad for the human health and a higher level of fatty acids which are good for us than the regular milk. Unfortunately it also has a higher price.

The low quality of the conventional milk comes from the fact that the farms have relied mainly on chemically treated fodder rather than standard grazing which changed considerably the nutritional value of the milk.

The result is even more worrying because this practice is something extremely frequent all over the world.

The result of the British study concluded that the organic milk is rich in essential Omega 3 amino acids, antioxidants and vitamin E which help fighting infections. The studies concluded that the organic milk is also rich in vitamin A and beta-carotene.

You should know that the organic milk is treated at very high temperatures in order to increase the storage capability.

This type of milk must keep for long because it is not produced on the entire territory of a country, so it must survive the storage and the transport.

Because of the fact that the cows are not treated with antibiotics or hormones, and the main fodder consists in organic grass, the milk does not carry any chemicals. However…the market is facing a saturation of conventional milk sold for a lower price than the organic one and that price is directly responsible for the low impact it has on the market.

The cause behind this is none other than a high economical tendency of making harder the introduction of organics as high rated products. The mass production of milk is mainly covering the mass production suppliers. The mass suppliers are those farm chains able to deliver a high quantity of milk for a very low price.

The low price is a direct result of treating the cows with antibiotics, using genetically modified fodder and most of all the accelerated growth of the life stock.

The organic milk is influenced by the time allocated for grazing, the quality of the pasture which also has to be organic and of course the natural growth course of the life stock which takes longer.

All the above require investment, time and patience but also a lot of certifications which increase the cost of the end products which are milk and derivatives.

The “Land of the Rising Sun” is facing the wrath of nature. It has now been compounded with a dangerous emergency that has never been seen before. Japan is staring in the face of a major radioactive leak.

The Fukushima nuclear plant has reported radiation levels that are 15,000 times higher than the accepted levels immediately after the earthquake. The plant processes nuclear fuel and 2 of its reactors were intentionally made to explode in order to release the pressure from the inner core. Thousands of citizens residing around the affected area have been asked to stay inside their homes and avoid the rains.

Hiromu Nonaka, the Chief Cabinet Secretary, has stated that abnormal reactions may still be continuing inside the nuclear facility. The probability of a “critical incident” having occurred there can’t be denied and there is increasing concern about the radiation levels in the nearby areas. So far three workers have been admitted to the hospital on the 12th and on the 14th another 12 people were severely hurt.

Under the shadow of the largest disaster since the atomic bomb, the perspective of a nuclear accident about to happen as a consequence of the largest earthquake in the history of the modern Japan frightens the entire international community.

There is much speculation about the cause of this leak but it is being assumed that the uranium reached a critical point even though the plant had automatically shut down after the quake. Reports say that the lack of electricity may have been responsible for this, making the water cooling system no longer capable to maintain the low temperature of the plant’s nuclear core.

Almost 6 square kilometers of area around the affected plant has been cordoned off and is considered forbidden zone due to the high levels of radiation. The latest news state clearly that a reactor explosion at Fukushima is imminent.

There have been major nuclear plant accidents around the world including Chernobyl explosion ( Ukraine 1986) and Three Mile Island ( Pennsylvania), but experts agree that this incident in Japan may turn out to be the worst ever incident of nuclear radiation leak.

Japan has increasingly turned towards private nuclear power plants to meet its power needs, especially after the 1973 oil crisis. The country depends for its entire oil fuel needs on other countries, thus needed to be able to produce much of its power with the help of nuclear power production plants. Currently these plants were supplying about 42% of their need.

There have been previous incidents of leaks and high radiation levels in surrounding areas of these nuclear power plants but nothing has come close to the current scale of disaster.

A nuclear disaster at Fukushima would be the largest ecological disaster of this nature. The world trembles at the thought of the third largest world economy being crushed by the mighty nature and the fearsome consequences of its wrath.

There are a lot of definitions floating around the natural products certified as organic and this makes the evaluation and the choice very difficult. ECOCERT in Europe and USDA in America are the authorities responsible for analyzing and certifying the natural organic products.

The regulations of these public authorities state that the organic cosmetics must have a high content in vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants. The organic cosmetics must not contain synthesized chemical products which have been proven toxic for the human body after a steady use.

Because the skin is the largest organ of the human body, the products coming in contact with it must have at least 50% vegetable ingredients of which at least 5% organic, in order to be certified.

The regulation is based on the fact that the chemical elements present in the cosmetics get inside our body through skin follicles and increase the toxic levels of our blood. Methyl, butyl, parabens and other preservatives from the regular cosmetic products are behind a lot of health problems from skin irritation to severe hormonal changes, metabolic and neurological dysfunctions, fertility issues and even some types of cancer.

The regulations insisted upon this because a large majority of ingredients from beauty supplies are also the ingredients of high pollutants like detergents, paint or raw materials for industrial use.

The natural organic cosmetics have only recently moved from a niche market to the market of high consume. The green current and the campaigns conducted for a healthy lifestyle and a healthy beauty has got the girls thinking that researching first and buying later is the right way to go.

Due to the ecological rules of the above cited authorities, the strict monitoring allowed the female consumers to avoid the traps set by producers labeling as organic, regular products.

Here is what you should know about organic cosmetics:

They have scent and color but the scent and color are given by essential oils extracted from plants or fruit and 100% natural pigments. As preservatives, these products use plant extracts which, unfortunately, are a lot less strong than the chemical components. As a result, these cosmetic products have a shorter life span from the moment the container is opened.

Another thing that you will notice for sure is the price. Everything bio in the cosmetic world is considerably more expensive than the traditional cosmetics. But when you Google skin issues you will see for sure that at least 50% of them are caused by allergies or irritations which result from the use of cosmetic products. Isn’t the price worth it after all?
