In this article, we will tell you five ways that can prevent such abominable wastage of energy. So, here we go with five ways to reduce your energy consumption:
1. Unplugging the electronic devices
The thumb rule is to always unplug the electronic devices when not in use. When these devices are plugged in, these devices employ the use of standby power which is usually around five to ten percent of the total energy consumption of the house.
Always unplug the devices and save electricity!
2. Replacement of bulbs to save energy
Bulbs consume a humungous amount of energy, especially the incandescent light bulbs that not only hurt our eyes but also increase energy consumption levels. Instead of these, it is highly advised that you replace all incandescent bulbs at home with fluorescent bulbs.
Fluorescent bulbs consume less energy and provide the same amount of light. In fact, you can easily save up to $50 every year by substituting 15 incandescent bulbs with CFL bulbs. Isn’t that amazing?
3. Cleaning the furnace regularly
In order to reduce energy consumption, it is highly recommended that you clean the filter fitted to the furnace at least once a month. Ensuring a cleaned filter in the furnace will substantially reduce the overall energy consumption required for the purpose of heating your home by at least 5 percent.
While cleaning the filter, make sure you follow the guidelines provided in the manufacturer’s manual so that do you the job properly.
4. Turn down the thermostat
Turning down the thermostat can help you reduce energy consumption to great levels. Reduce the temperature setting on your hot-water system by about two to three degrees.
Also, you should never ever leave heaters switched on all night—it is better you warm up your bed with the help of a hot-water bottle or may be an electric blanket.
We overuse the hot-water systems at times, without realizing the impact this creates upon the overall energy consumption levels.
5. Little bit of planting will do
In order to reduce your excessive reliance upon air-conditioning systems, you should go green by planting shrubs and trees outside the house. The shade these shrubs and trees provide will reduce the temperature inside the house during summer.
If you grow a shrub like lily pilly just outside the windows, then you will experience a good windbreak, helping you to keep outside cold air during winter.
