Researchers have discovered new way to route internet traffic that could save electricity bills for big companies like Google, Microsoft.
It was found that big internet companies could save up to 40% on their electricity bills using an internet routing algorithm that tracks electricity price fluctuations.
Data centers consume lot of energy, which costs operators millions of dollars every year to run. As more digital information is accessed and virtualized, centralized data centers require even more energy to run. It was estimated that energy usage by such data centers is expected to quadrupled by next year.
A study from researchers at MIT, Carnegie Mellon University, and the networking company Akamai suggests that such Internet businesses could reduce their energy use by as much as 40 percent by rerouting data to locations where electricity prices are lowest on a particular day.
