Egypt Bans Import And Export Of Genetically Modified Food

GM foodsRecently Egypt announced that it won’t be importing or exporting genetically modified food.

Many traders both outside and inside the country are stunned with the decision, as Egypt’s main agricultural imports currently include many GMO’s.

The official news agency reports that any agricultural imports to Egypt must have a certificate from the origin of the country that the products are not genetically modified and the same rules applies to Egyptian exports as well.

The debate in Egypt over food quality has become politically heated after some Russian wheat was rejected over quality concerns. Members of parliament have been calling for stricter rules and greater agricultural self sufficiency.
